Volunteering can reduce stress levels and promote a positive mindset. It’s also a wonderful way to build social connections and gain a sense of belonging, helping to foster resilience and combat feelings of depression and anxiety.
Now is the perfect time to learn more about how you can get involved and make a positive difference in someone’s life.
St George Community, 3Bridges, Advanced Diversity Services, the Aged and Community Care Providers Association, and Sydney Community Forum have come together to host a volunteer expo.
The St George Volunteer Mini Expo will take place on Wednesday, 12 February 2025, 10am to 12pm at Marana Auditorium, 16 McMahon Street, Hurstville.
This event celebrates volunteers and brings together a variety of volunteer organisations, each showcasing opportunities to get involved in the community.
One volunteer who has seen the benefits firsthand is Else Brown, who has been volunteering at St George Community for more than a year.
“Volunteering is such a great way to get out and about while also being helpful in the community,” said seventy-six-year-old Else, who lives in Narwee.
Else shared the journey that led her to volunteering: “My husband Gary and I were loyal clients of St George Community for years. We used their transport services once Gary reached an age where he could no longer drive.
“A couple of years ago, Gary’s dementia reached the stage where he had to move into aged care. It was a really difficult time for me. So, to step out of my comfort zone, I joined one of St George Community’s social trips to Bowral. On that trip, I chatted with some volunteers, and they inspired me to become one myself.”
Else was a receptionist for many years before she retired. She now uses her office skills to assist with client calls, transport, and social bookings at the St George Community head office.
“I think my computer skills are pretty good for someone my age, and it’s great for me to keep my brain engaged,” said Else. “You’re never too old to learn new things and contribute to the community. Volunteering has made me so happy, and I’ve made so many friends at St George Community – both as a client and a volunteer.”
