Still Giving Back at 88: Bert’s Story

14 May 2026

At 88, Bert is still showing up each week, still helping out and still giving back to the community he has been part of for so many years.

A familiar and well-liked face around the depot, Bert has spent many years volunteering across different parts of the organisation and remains an important part of the St George Community family today.

Originally from Northern Ireland, Bert moved to Sydney with his wife Elizabeth in the 1970s and built a life centred around family, community and helping others.

Over the years, he has contributed in many ways, including driving buses and helping around the depot yard. At one point, St George Community even had a bus named in his honour, something still fondly remembered by long-time staff and volunteers.

These days, Bert continues helping behind the scenes around the yard, always happy to keep busy and contribute where needed.

His long connection with St George Community means just about everybody knows Bert, and he is always quick to stop for a chat or share a story.

While much has changed over the years, Bert says he has always enjoyed the people and sense of community that volunteering brings.

His story is a reminder that volunteering does not have an age limit. Whether helping clients directly or quietly assisting behind the scenes, every contribution matters.

At 88, Bert is still showing up, still helping and still giving back to the community he has been part of for so many years.
