Volunteering is more than just lending a hand – it’s a way to build connections, reduce stress, and create a sense of belonging. For Else Brown, who has been volunteering at St George Community for over a year, it’s all of that and more.
“Volunteering is such a great way to get out and about while also being helpful in the community,” said Else, who lives in the St George area.
Her journey to volunteering began after years as a client of St George Community. “My husband Gary and I were loyal clients for years, especially for their transport service after Gary could no longer drive,” she shared.
A couple of years ago, Gary’s dementia progressed, and he moved into aged care. It was a heartbreaking adjustment for Else. Seeking connection and a way to step out of her comfort zone, she joined one of St George Community’s overnight trips to Bowral. On that trip, she met volunteers who inspired her to join their ranks.
Before retiring, Else worked as a receptionist, and she now uses those skills to assist with client calls, transport, and social bookings.
“I think my computer skills are pretty good for someone my age, and it’s great for me to keep my brain engaged,” she said. “You’re never too old to learn new things and contribute to the community. Volunteering has made me so happy, and I’ve made so many friends at St George Community – both as a client and a volunteer.”
We are incredibly grateful to Else and all our volunteers for the time, care, and dedication they bring to St George Community. Their commitment helps keep our community connected and thriving.
If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, now is the perfect time to get involved. You might just change someone’s life – including your own.
