For Christine, volunteering is all about helping people stay connected, included and enjoying themselves.
For more than three years, Christine has been one of the friendly faces helping clients enjoy social outings with St George Community.
Volunteering one day a week, Christine supports clients on a variety of outings including lunches, concerts, shows and day trips – helping make sure everyone feels comfortable, included and supported throughout the day.
“It’s a good day because I get a kick out of them having a good time,” she says.
Christine says she enjoys seeing clients socialise, laugh and connect with others while getting out into the community.
“A lot of them wouldn’t get out at all if it wasn’t for these outings.”
Her role involves much more than simply accompanying clients on trips. From helping people on and off the bus, assisting with meals and walking alongside clients who need extra support, Christine is constantly checking in and making sure everyone is comfortable.
“You’ve got to be kind and patient,” she says. “You don’t rush them.”
Before volunteering with St George Community, Christine worked in dental reception roles in Macquarie Street practices for many years before retiring. She was introduced to volunteering through her involvement with the SES and quickly found herself drawn to the role.
Over time, she has built strong connections with many regular clients and says it is the people who keep her coming back each week.
“They’re lovely people,” she says. “I enjoy being with them.”
For Christine, the simple moments are often the most rewarding – sharing a laugh over morning tea, helping someone feel confident and included, or watching clients get up for a dance during an outing or Christmas party.
“It’s important for people to still feel independent,” she says. “You help when they need it.”
